Residents in Sneinton, a Nottingham suburb, apparently reported a large police presence including riot vans in the early hours of this morning to the BBC. Nottinghamshire Police later confirmed arrests had been made for conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass and criminal damage at a power industry facility. Energy giants E-On have confirmed that the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station was to be targeted by protester today though this has not been confirmed by any independent source or indeed any protest groups themselves.
The raids represent a shift in recent police tactics opting for preemptive attack, rather than waiting for an actual law to be broken. This tactic was also recently used against five individuals in Plymouth who where arrested under terrorist legislation for possession of ‘political material’ and what is believed to be fireworks. The arrests where used in the smear campaign (see Media lies, anarchists and the G20) against G20 protests however all five arrestees where released without charge.
Power company Eon have been regularly targeted by climate protesters for their hideous environmental policies including the building of a new coal fired power stations at Kingsnorth (see related articles). Whilst the government is calling for a 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 this new power station will emit between 6 and 8 million tons of CO2 every year. That’s equivalent to the annual emissions of Malawi’s 13 million people or more CO2 than Heathrow’s third runway would burn."
