"In an effort to sharpen our hatred and contempt for the existing social order a few of us decided to form an anti-authoritarian/anarchist reading group here in Olympia. This group will be ongoing, open to all and will be focusing mostly on post-left anarchist theory. We will try and provide copies of literature for people who can't afford it, but we suggest that individuals bring their own material.
Our goal is to build/deepen our relationships with each other and to further our critique of all forms of coercion and domination.
The first book we're reading is Fredy Perlman's novel "Letters of Insurgents".
Two individuals living on distant continents resume contact through correspondence. They describe meaningful relationships in their lives during the twenty years since they took part in a failed revolution, comparing the choices each took. Yarostan lives in an unnamed "workers' republic"; Sophia in an anonymous Western "democracy". They both make efforts to live true to their desires. Along the way, they encounter bureaucrats, idealists, racists, flouters of social convention, laborers, militants, professors, jailers, hucksters, and more.
Through their story they critique deep seated social conventions, capitalism, communism, political opportunism, religion, morality, academia, platformism, unions and the effectiveness of working with social institutions.
