Call For Student Support For The RNC 8

"Eight organizers from Minnesota are being tried for “conspiracy to incite a riot” and “conspiracy to destroy property.” Charged as “terrorists” by the state of Minnesota for participating in logistical organizing aimed at supporting resistance to the Republican National Convention (RNC), the RNC 8 face over a decade in prison. If they are found guilty, this case will serve as a precedent for prosecuting those who organize in their communities to resist the systems of greed and exploitation that threaten us all.

–please share with student groups in your community!–

The outcome of this trial rests not just in the hands of the eight being prosecuted, or their lawyers, but with us. The impact will be felt by us all: a government able to convict and imprison these folks will be a government emboldened to pursue wider and greater attacks on civil liberties, free speech and organizing.

We are calling on college students across the country to show solidarity with the RNC 8.

Money is crucial. Lawyers, investigators and expert witnesses cost money. The estimated cost of the trial is $250,000. Though none of us have that kind of money just lying around, the price becomes more manageable if we all kick in.

College provides a unique set of opportunities. Most colleges set aside significant funds to pay for outside speakers. Student organizations can host one of the eight to speak on the RNC and the suppression of dissent. In addition to raising awareness, the money to pay that speaker will be added to the defense fund.

We want people to educate themselves. Sign the petition and join our listserv to stay up to date on actions and new developments. Print out and read the RNC 8 zine and other materials at RNC8.org/propaganda. Pass that zine to a friend. Talk with your friends and family about the case and why you care. The more people are educated and the wider our networks, the better equipped we are to resist repression.

We encourage folks to be creative. One of the great strengths of horizontal organizing is its ability to draw on all of our strengths and ideas. By taking action to support our friends and comrades, we are taking action to defend ourselves and the work we care about.

No one should have to fight the system alone.

Take a stand.
