Introducing Bash Back Ghana

"In Ghana there is a problem that we feel is bigger than perceived homophobia – young men posing as gays online in order to entrap genuine homosexuals. They often have the support of members of the police.

Their aim is to get their victim to meet up with them. A number of things can then happen:

You may find the police welcoming you (homosexuality is illegal in Ghana)
They may greet pick you up in a car or taxi which stops on the way to allow gang members to jump in and rob you.
You may get to their house only to find a gang waiting
You may be kidnapped until you give money
They may return to you hotel or house the next day with police

The aim of all these strategies is to extort money through fear and intimidation.

After a foreigner was recently kidnapped in the middle of the day in one of the busiest beaches in the capital we felt something had to be done.

Because we are dealing with criminals who have the support of the police in a culture where the act is illegal, it makes our work difficult and we have to remain anonymous.

Initially we aim to warn people on dating sites of the dangers involved. We have set up a profile for the man that did the kidnapping exposing him on gaydar. We are collating information on the scammers. We have created a webpage:

We would welcome any comments or advice you were able to give.
Best wishes
